What should i use to treat this??
Q: I have a 7-year-old cat.(neutered male) he has devoloped what resembles acne under his chin/jaw area. when he tries to scratch this spot, he immediately recoils in pain. the area is some-what swollen/inflamed.he still eats and drinks normally. also, his general disposition hasn't changed. would a triple-antibiotic be an effective course of treatment? thank you, robert wilcke
A: You could try but i have found 2.5 percent benzoal peroxide gels or creams more effective. a good vet product for this is bactoderm. might want to see vet as might have secondary bacterial infection which might need oral antibiotic prescription

Cat fleas
Q: Will my frontline for small dog also work on my cat?
A: No, do not use frontline for a dog on a cat.
Shop for: frontline
Bug repellant
Q: Is it okay to put a little bug (mosquito)repellant on my dogs (beagles) when i take them for a walk in an area where there are lots of gnats and mosquitoes? they are on frontline plus and program, but i don't think either of those helps. when we walk, the bugs will cover their eyelids, nose and mouths. if not, what can i use for this problem?
A: I am concerned about using frontline plus and program at the same time. was this recommended by your veterinarian? you may want to switch to k-9 advantix if you have no cats at home. k-9 advantix also kills and repels mosquitoes. use this product in place of the other medications.
Shop for: advantix, frontline plus, frontline
7 in 1 vaccines for 12 week old pup
Q: I ahve a female pitbull that is 12 weeks old. and last tuesday and my vet was closed for vacatio. so i brought her a 7 in 1 shot from a drugstore and gave it two her. will this be ok until her next three weeks shot. if not what do you recomend. thanks and god bless
A: It should be fine if your puppy was 12 weeks or older.
Flea problem using frontline spray
Q: I have two 7lb malteses (hair cut short), and although i use frontline spray regularly, occasionally still find a flea or two on them. our yard is also treated for fleas and ticks regularly, but we have stray cats that roam our yard. i've often thought of purchasing frontline plus, but concerned it says it is for dogs over 10lbs. what would you recommend?
A: Frontline products are not flea repellants, so you can notice fleas on your pet before the product has a chance to kill them.
Shop for: frontline, tick, frontline plus, frontline spray
Hariballs
Q: Hi, i'm babysitting my neice's cat for about 3 months now. he is a long hair mature cat (13 years old), he shed a lot of hair, and he also cleaned himself often, but i never see him throwing up hariball, where does the hair go after he licked himself? should i be concerned? should i take him for a grooming so he does not shed so much? thanks.
A: Grooming and cuts can sometimes help. hair is likely being passed through the digestive tract as it does in most cats.
Choking cough
Q: I have a chihuaha thats 1 year old and she has a type of cough that sound likes she choking on something, or like she wants to spit something up. is cough medicine sufficient? if so what non-prescription medication do you recomend? she's always cold so i keep a heating pad under her little bed. also she so skinny, she wieghs under 5 pounds is that normal for her? thanks alot!
A: She does sound a bit thin but that is hard for me to evaluate as i cannot see her. i would see your vet for a full workup for the cough to include stool check, cbc blood count and x rays. if all normal, she likely has an allergic cough which can be treated with medicines.
Combined therapy
Q: Your response to combining program with frontline for a dog is that it shouldn't be done. an earlier response was that it could be tried, although you recommended capstar with frontline. in treating a mature cat is program and frontline together contraindicated? thank you
A: Sorry for mixup. you can treat adult cat with program and front line if you wish. i always prefer to use as least chemicals as possible. both program and capstar when used together are nice alternatives to topicals, as program is not insecticide and capstar has very little toxicity reactions even in young kittens.

7 mos. old female cat
Q: I am wondering if there is a food or vitiman, activity, something to ease the symptoms of estress(sp?). my latest little darling orphan, has begun to display signs of being in heat. she's a great little gal, siamese mix, longhaired, perfect straight blue eyes. not very verbal, not like some i've met. i keep her under strict house arrest and will till i can afford spaying. is there any thing that i can do for her ?
A: Only thing i would use is rescue remedy from health food store. she is exhibiting a natural behavior
Cat eating house plants
Q: Why is my cat eating my house plants?
A: It can either be part of a playing behavior, or because the animal craves the addition of fiber to its diet. there are houseplants that are poisonous to cats, so be sure to check them out.
